The Household Chemical CleanOut is a free initiative run by the City of Sydney, in partnership with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), to help residents safely dispose of common but potentially harmful household chemicals. This program is part of a broader effort to reduce environmental damage and support a cleaner, more sustainable city.

What’s It All About?

Every year, households accumulate various chemical products—paint, pesticides, oils, cleaning agents—that are no longer needed but can’t go in regular bins. Disposing of these items incorrectly can pollute waterways, harm wildlife, and even pose fire or health risks.

The Chemical CleanOut program offers residents a safe and easy way to get rid of these materials, ensuring they are properly treated, recycled, or disposed of by professionals.

What You Can Drop Off

The program accepts a wide range of items, including:

• Paints and varnishes

• Household and automotive oils

• Cleaning chemicals

• Garden pesticides and herbicides

• Gas bottles and fire extinguishers

• Car batteries and household batteries

• Fluorescent light tubes and smoke alarms

• Solvents, fuels, and other flammable liquids

These items should be stored securely and clearly labeled before being taken to the drop-off site.

How the Program Works

CleanOut events are held on scheduled dates throughout the year. Residents simply pack their unwanted chemicals into their car (preferably in the boot), drive to the event location, and stay in the vehicle while trained staff unload the items. There are also pedestrian and cyclist access areas available for those without cars.

The next event in 2025 will take place at the Alexandra Canal Depot in Alexandria, a convenient inner-city location.

Why It Matters

Improper disposal of chemicals is a major source of pollution in cities. Since its launch, the CleanOut program has diverted hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste from landfills and waterways. Some of these materials are even recycled—used oils are refined, and old paint is turned into industrial fuel.

By using this service, residents play a direct role in protecting the environment and reducing the city’s overall waste footprint.
